The past week has been another busy one for UELSports. In addition to the opening of our new £21 million sports facility, SportsDock, there were sports tournaments, taster sessions, BUCS successes and international representations to report.
Last weekend SportsDock played host to its first event, an international Jordan Brand Classic training camp and Allstar match. And then on Monday morning SportsDock opened it’s doors to staff, students and public members. To celebrate the opening of the new centre, Katy and Claire have organised two weeks of free sport for all staff and students. This ‘Festival of Sport’ provides individuals with the opportunity to come and check our the centre as well as try a new sport, or refresh their skills in an old one. Ciennna’s rounders session on Friday evening was no doubt the highlight so far, but we have also offered sessions in a range of other sports. There are still 4 days of the festival left. If you’d like to take part, check out our timetable.
The BUCS leagues are currently reaching their climax, and though we’ll have to wait another week to find out where all the teams have finished, we do know that all three of our men’s football teams are league champions. The 1st XI will be promoted for the third consecutive year.
BUCS success this week was not confined to the team sports. On Saturday Szandra Szogedi won the -57kg category at the BUCS Judo Championships in Sheffield. Kleovoulos Loucaides was unlucky not to add to the medal tally as he narrowly lost in the quarter-finals of the -73kg category. Szandra will travel to Morocco for the African Championships in two weeks time, hoping to consolidate her place in the Ghanian team for the Olympic Games.
Another athlete with London 2012 on their mind is Asghar Hasini, who has just returned from the WVOD Intercontential Cup in Egypt, where he was representing the GB sitting volleyball team. Ashgar is currently a member of a 13-man training squad which will be cut to 11 for the Paralympics. We’re hoping that Asghar will be part of that squad.
While Cienna was busily making up rules for the aforementioned rounders session, Yassin and the Sports Reps were running a very successful Campus Sports Basketball tournament. Twelve teams participated in the 3v3 mixed events, and after 2 1/2 hours of matches, a team of ringers, calling themselves ‘Mystical’, took the honors. Next up: Dodgeball on 28th March.
In the coming week we have the last few BUCS league fixtures, and Astujus Kazlauskas competes in the BUCS boxing finals in Sheffield. The Festival of Sport continues, there is, of course, the SportsDock launch event, and we continue our preparations for the end of year Sports Awards dinner. Plenty to keep us busy!
