Orient victorious as unbeaten pre-season continues

A goal each from David Mooney and Kevin Lisbie was enough to earn Leyton Orient a 2-1 victory against recently reborn New York Cosmos.

A lot has changed at the American club that boasted in its ranks both Pele and Franz Beckenbauer in the seventies and eighties.

The Cosmos are 10 days away from resuming in the second tier of the American system. The away contingent will be hoping Sebastian Guenzatti can build upon his 74th minute goal, which was assisted by goalkeeper Jamie Jones’s mistake and star man ex-Spain international Marcos Senna can continue to perform.

The O’s began brightly with Lisbie heading a Lloyd James free kick just over the crossbar on 3 minutes, before the visiting side had their first chance five minutes later. Jemal Johnson firing over from 20 yards.

The lively Shaun Batt was next to try his luck from 20 yards, as he also shot over the crossbar on the 13th minute.

Former Blackburn man, Johnson again went close on 16 minutes. The forward cutting in from the right hand-side and dragging his effort inches wide.

The home side opened the scoring on 23 minutes when Mathieu Baudry cushioned a James corner down to Mooney, who was deemed to have poked the ball past the goal- line by Referee Mr Stuart Attwell, in spite of the New York Cosmos’s defenders protests.

On the half hour mark, sloppy defending from the Cosmos’s allowed Lisbie to slide a delightful cross into the path of Moses Odubajo. But, Odubajo was denied by Jimmy Maurer’s feet.

The US club had a great opportunity to draw level on 36 minutes, as an Ayoze corner was powered onto the crossbar by Joseph Nane. The rebound fell to substitute Alessandro Noselli, who had only been on the pitch a minute, but the Italian’s strike hit the post.

The O’s holding onto their 1-0 lead at half-time, despite their American counterparts finishing the first half the stronger of two.

The second-half began slowly and had only kicked into life, once Lisbie had doubled Leyton Orient’s lead from the penalty spot on 58 minutes. Lisbie sending Maurer the wrong way with the spot-kick after Baudry had been dragged to ground by Hunter Gorskie.

James had the chance to put the game beyond the Cosmos’s reach on 63 minutes, although, the midfielder’s curling free kick was tipped wide by Maurer.

The visiting team was offered a route back into the contest with 16 minutes remaining. Noselli doing well to create space to release a long range drive that should have been dealt with by Jones. However, the ball inexplicably slipped through the Orient keeper’s grasp and landed in the back of the net.

Despite pulling a goal back, New York Cosmos failed to create an opening to level the scores and Orient held on for their third pre-season victory.
